SAN ANTONIO ? Sophomore outside hitter Kendra Rowland had a match-high 16 kills and UTSA collected a dozen team blocks in an easy 25-18, 25-16, 25-18 victory against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Tuesday night at the Convocation Center.
The Roadrunners improved to 17-9 overall and 9-3 in Southland Conference play in winning for the sixth time in the last seven contests. Meanwhile, the Islanders (3-19, 1-11 SLC) dropped their 10th tilt in a row, a streak that started when UTSA won in five sets on Oct. 3.
After A&M-Corpus Christi pulled within three at 17-14 in the first frame, the Roadrunners closed out the set with an 8-4 run to take the early lead. UTSA then led from start to finish in next stanza and took a commanding 2-0 lead into intermission. It was all Roadrunners after the break and they powered their way to their 16th win in the past 19 matches.
Rowland hit .297 on the night (five errors/37 attacks), while junior middle hitter Stefanie Robbins continued her hot play, hitting .412 on the strength of eight kills and just one miscue in 17 swings.
Sophomore middle hitter Valorie Rogers came off the bench and led UTSA's net defense with a match-high five total blocks, while Robbins and freshman Amber Brooks added four apiece.
Islanders libero Kandyce Nielson collected a match-leading 21 digs and Jessica Korda had 10 winners.
The Roadrunners have won all 10 meetings in the all-time series, six of which have been sweeps.
UTSA continues its current five-match home stand on Friday night when it hosts Nicholls (7-15, 4-8 SLC) in a 7 p.m. tilt. Seniors Audrey Hiser, Rebecca Hrapmann and Gena Rhodes will be honored for their contributions to the program prior to the contest.
