Senior Onika Anderson had her third double-double of the year on Saturday.

SAN ANTONIO ? The UTSA women’s basketball team couldn’t overcome a slow start against Arkansas State and it fell 73-59 in the fourth and final game of the Star Shuttle Thanksgiving Classic on Saturday at the Convocation Center.

Senior forward Onika Anderson posted her third double-double of the season with team highs of 16 points and 12 rebounds, while senior guard Monica Gibbs and sophomore guard Amber Gregg added a dozen on the night. Senior forward Ryba Pawlaczyk held game-honors for the Roadrunners (1-5) with 14 rebounds, one shy of her career high.

The Red Wolves (4-3) were led by Ebonie Jefferis and Sherina Scott, who netted 16 apiece.

Anderson sparked an 11-2 UTSA run with eight points to help the Roadrunners cut ASU’s lead to 42-36 within the first five minutes of the second half. Gregg’s three ball from the right corner got the Birds within five, but Scott’s free throws pushed the lead back to double-digits. Lyndsay Schlup’s layup gave the Red Wolves a 14-point advantage with 5:12 to play. UTSA trimmed the lead to 10 on Gregg’s second 3-pointer on the night, but Arkansas State was too much down the stretch.

ASU took an early 18-7 lead when Schlup was good on a three-point play with 8:49 to play in the first half. Senior guard Andrea Garcia stopped the run with a 15-foot jumper from the left wing to make the score 18-9. Smith’s tip in with 35 ticks remaining gave the Red Wolves their largest lead of the game at 18. Freshman guard Cierra Martin connected on a 3-pointer as time expired to pull UTSA 40-25 at the half.

The Roadrunners return to action next Saturday, Dec. 6, against Huston-Tillotson at the Convocation Center. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m.
