SAN ANTONIO ? Sophomore Devin Gibson led three Roadrunners in double figures with 14 points and UTSA picked up the 400th victory in program history with an 80-55 victory against McMurry on Tuesday night at the Convocation Center.
The Roadrunners never trailed in improving to 2-2 on the season and 4-0 all-time against McMurry, which was playing its season opener.
Gibson also posted six steals ? a season high and one shy of his career-high seven recorded last year against Navy ? four rebounds, four assists and a pair of blocks.
Junior Omar Johnson and senior Travis Gabbidon both reached double digits in scoring for the fourth game this season with 13 and 11, respectively, while junior Josh Bonney added nine points and nine boards.
Ten different Roadrunners scored and UTSA registered 19 offensive boards in out-rebounding McMurry, 42-38. Gibson’s six steals were part of 17 team thefts, as UTSA forced 28 turnovers for the game.
UTSA shot just 39.4 percent from the floor, including 10-of-35 from behind the 3-point line, but limited McMurry to 25 percent from downtown in a game that was never in doubt.
A Gabbidon layup capped a 10-3 run by UTSA over the first two minutes, 21 seconds of the second half, giving the Roadrunners a 48-28 lead.
Gibson drained a twisting jumper in the lane at the 13:16 mark to push the lead to 55-34, but McMurry used a 10-2 run to climb back to within 13 points at the midway point of the half.
The Roadrunners held strong, steadily extending their lead back to as many as 26 in the final 10 minutes.
UTSA held a 13-point lead (38-25) at the break on the strength of six 3-pointers. Gibson scored 10 of his 14 points and came up half of his thefts in the stanza.
Jonathan Walker led McMurry with 16 points, while Brett Johnson pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.
The Roadrunners will travel to Annapolis, Md., to face Navy at 6 p.m. (CT) on Tuesday, Dec. 2.
