Roadrunners to head to Sunflower State for pair of games

SAN ANTONIO ? UTSA looks to get back on the winning track when it visits the Sunflower State this weekend. The Roadrunners continue their three-game road trip at Wichita State on Friday and Kansas State two days later.

UTSA Tube:
The Roadrunners will be featured on television three times this season. Time Warner Cable (Channel 50) will broadcast the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi contest on Jan. 24 and UT Arlington on Feb. 14. The Southland Television Network will air the Northwestern State home game on Jan. 24.

Series Meeting:
Wichita State leads the all-time series, 2-1, against UTSA, while Kansas State holds a 1-0 advantage in the all-time series against the Roadrunners.  

Last time out:
Senior forwards Onika Anderson (22 points/13 rebounds) and Ryba Pawlaczyk (17 points/15rebounds) and senior guard Monica Gibbs (14 points/11assists) each recorded double-doubles, but TCU had three players that scored in double figures and the Lady Frogs defeated UTSA, 73-60, on Nov. 16 in Fort Worth.

Scouting Wichita State and Kansas State:
Wichita State opened its season with a 76-69 overtime win at home against Colorado State on Nov. 15. The Shockers then dropped a 89-76 decision at Oral Roberts on Tuesday. WSU has a trio averaging double-figures led byMarisah Henderson’s 20.5 points per game. Marcy Sudbeck and Val Siemens are averaging 18.5 and 11.5 points per contest, respectively.

Kansas State started of the 2008-09 season with a pair of road wins last week. The Wildcats collected their first win of the season with a  65-44 victory at UTEP on Nov. 14 and they then defeated Northwestern, 57-52, on Nov. 17. Ashley Sweat leads KSU with 16.0 points  and 6.5 rebounds per game. Marlies Gipson ranks second with 12.5 points per contest.

The Gibbs’ Watch:
Senior guard Monica Gibbs became UTSA’s all-time assists leader with 472 a year ago. The Stillwater, Okla., native is on pace to rewrite the program’s record book once again this season. She is 83 rebounds shy of passing Margaret Martinovich, who holds the all-time mark with 778 rebounds.  Gibbs is also on track to become the 11th player in school history to score 1,000 points. She currently has 969 career points in her four-year career.

700-rebound club:
Senior Monica Gibbs is five rebounds shy of becoming the third Roadrunner in the program’s history to haul in 700 boards. Gibbs has collected 695 rebounds in her four-year career.

Looking to dish out 500 dimes:
Senior guard Monica Gibbs broke UTSA’s assists record last season with 472 dimes. This year, she already has recorded 19 assists to bring her career total to 491.

Ryba posts back-to-back double-doubles:
Senior forward Ryba Pawlaczyk is off to a hot start this season. The Wroclaw, Poland, native has already tallied a pair of double-doubles to open the season, the first two of her career. She netted a career-high 20 points and hauled in 12 rebounds on Nov.14. She followed that performance with 17 points and a career-best 15 boards at TCU on Nov. 16

Coming off the bench:
Sophomore guard Rachel Schlosser came off the bench to score 18 points, while connecting on four 3-pointers in the win against Texas A&M International on Nov. 14. She is averaging 12.0 points per game this season.

Picking up were she left off:
With a season already under her belt, sophomore guard Jordan Stark picked up where she left off in last Friday’s season opener. The Weatherford, Okla., native scored 19 points on 6-of-9 from the floor, dished out a career-high six assists and connected on five 3-pointers in the win against TAMIU on Nov. 14.

Stark steals the show:
Sophomore Jordan Stark posted a career-high seven steals against Texas A&M International last Friday night. the Weatherford, Okla, native was two shy of she school-record set by Rhonda Hoffman, who collected nine against Sam Houston State on Jan. 27, 1984.

Onika brings the offense:
Senior Onika Anderson collected her 10th career double-double at TCU with 22 points and 13 rebounds. Last season’s SLC Newcomer of the Year led UTSA with nine double-doubles.

Runners preseason favorites:
UTSA was the unanimous choice to win the West Division in both the Southland Conference Coaches and Sports Information Directors preseason polls, the league office announced on Oct. 21. The Roadrunners collected seven first-place votes and totaled 62 points in the coaches rankings, finishing ahead 2007-08 SLC Regular Season Champion Texas State, which picked up 49 points. Meanwhile, UTSA garnered 10 of the 12 first place votes in the SIDs Poll for a total of 65 points. The Bobcats nabbed the other two first-place votes and finished with 47 points, while the Lamar tied Texas State with 47 points. It marks the second time the Roadrunners were selected as preseason SLC favorites. The last time they were picked atop in the rankings was 2003-04.

UTSA lands three on All-SLC preseason teams
: Seniors Onika Anderson and Monica Gibbs were named the league’s preseason first team and sophomore Whitney York collected second-team honors on Oct. 21.
