LAKE CHARLES, La. ? The UTSA soccer team fell to McNeese State, 4-2, in Southland Conference action on Sunday afternoon.
The Cowgirls (5-5-1, 1-0-1 SLC) jumped out to a 1-0 lead off Ja’Nae Powell’s goal at the 12-minute mark of the first half. McNeese then increased its lead to 2-0 on an own goal by UTSA (4-8, 1-1 SLC) at the 27-minute mark.
The Roadrunners cut the deficit to 2-1 when sophomore Laurel Dierking netted her first goal of the season off an assist from Taylor Padia with less than nine minutes to play in the first frame.
Powell’s second goal of the match gave the Cowgirls a 3-1 advantage at the 62-minute mark.
Freshman Bonnie Caulfield netted her first career goal, putting home a rebound off the post four minutes later to pull UTSA back within one. However, Powell struck again with a header in the 77th minute to help seal the match for McNeese.
The Roadrunners out shot the Cowgirls, 26-15, including 10-8 in shots on goal. McNeese goalkeeper Shelby Money came up with eight saves, though, to help in the win.
UTSA returns to action this weekend with a pair of home matches against Nicholls on Friday, Oct. 10, and versus Southeastern Louisiana two days later.
