Women?s tennis successful at Rice Classic

HOUSTON ? The UTSA women’s tennis team posted several solid performances at the Holiday Inn/Astrodome Rice Classic, which was held at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium over the weekend.

In doubles action, seniors Karen Scida and Eva Silvester teamed up to collect a 9-7 win over Rice’s Julie Chao and Analy Guzman in their first-round match. The tandem then fell, 8-4, to Maduca Rangontathan and Irina Paraschiv from North Texas. However, Scida and Silvester bounced back with an 8-3 win against Nicole Briceno and Sophie Quist from SMU to win the Flight 1 Doubles consolation bracket.

In the Flight 3 doubles brackets, senior Nathalie Wallin and junior Holly Phillips advance to the semifinals. The duo cruised past Emily Braid and Varsha Shiva-Shankar from Rice, then made quick work of Houston’s Vicky Simpson and Alix Young, 8-2. Phillips and Wallin lost, 8-5, to Texas State’s Ashley Ellis and Sakia Kruse in the semifinals.

In singles action, Scida picked up a, 5-7, 7-5, 1-0 win against UT Arlington’s Klara Jagosova to advance to the Flight 1 consolation semifinals. She then fell to Taylor Morgan from Samford in straight sets (6-4, 6-1).  Meanwhile, Wallin won the Flight 2 singles consolation bracket with a 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 against Lynley Wasson from Houston.

In the Flight 4 singles bracket, Phillips collected a pair of wins to capture the consolation title. She defeated Frederique Sunstrum from Lee College in straight sets (6-3, 6-4). Also in singles action was sophomore Caroline Dedering, who won the Flight 5 singles consolation bracket with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Chlsea Creed from Lee College.

Freshman Micaela Silva posted a straight-sets win (7-5, 6-3) versus Itzel Manzanera from UT Arlington en route to winning the Flight 6 singles consolation.

In the Flight 8 singles, freshman Katie Ottenbreit cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win against Rachel Cox from SMU to win her first collegiate title.

UTSA travels to Fort Worth this week for the ITA Regionals, which will be played from Oct 23-27.
