Women?s tennis to head to Houston this weekend

SAN ANTONIO ? The UTSA women’s tennis team opens its fall season at the Rice Classic, which will be played at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium in Houston this weekend.

Head coach Erin Boisclair, who is entering her third season, welcomes an experience team with six letterwinners and three newcomers. Among the returnees are seniors Karen Scida, was who second-team All-Southland Conference performer a year ago, Monika Drabkova and Nathalie Wallin. Also returning is junior Holly Phillips and sophomore Caroline Dedering. Boisclair brings in three outstanding freshmen in Katie Ottenbreit, Micaela Silva and Lauren Springer.

Scida led the Roadrunners with 14 singles victories and was impressive in SLC play, as she posted a 9-2 mark at the No. 1 slot last season. She also added eight victories in doubles play in 2008.

Meanwhile, Phillips ranked second on the team with 12 singles last season, while Wallin was third with nine triumphs last year.

Dedering posted a solid rookie campaign with 10 doubles wins and seven singles victories a year ago, while Drabkova led the squad with 11 doubles wins in 2008.
