SAN ANTONIO ? The UTSA men’s and women’s cross country teams will compete in the New Balance Islander Splash held this Friday at West Guth Park in Corpus Christi, Texas. The women’s 5,000 meters will begin at 6 p.m., followed by the men’s 8k at 6:30 p.m.
The Roadrunners are coming off a solid showing at the Ricardo Romo/Six Flags Fiesta Texas Classic last Friday. Junior Dana Mecke successfully defended her 5k crown with a 17:50.3 clocking, earning Southland Conference Athlete of the Week honors for the third time this season. Her victory helped UTSA finish fourth in the team standings.
The freshman duo of Layne Nixon and Ivan Garcia posted top-10 finishes to guide the men to a third-place team showing in a strong field behind Texas-Pan American and Texas and ahead of Houston in the nine-team field. Nixon covered the 5k Brooks City-Base loop in 15:48.8 to place seventh, while Garcia was ninth in 15:51.3.
