Roadrunners to host Ricardo Romo/Six Flags Fiesta Texas Classic this weekend

SAN ANTONIO ? The UTSA men’s and women’s cross country teams will host the Ricardo Romo/Six Flags Fiesta Texas Classic this weekend at Brooks City-Base.

The University races will take place Friday evening with the women’s 5,000-meter race at 6 p.m., followed by the men’s 5k at approximately 6:30 p.m. The Roadrunners are the defending champions on both sides and will look to defend against a tough field that includes Concordia, Houston, Incarnate Word, St. Mary’s (women only), Schreiner, Texas, Texas-Pan American, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (women only), Texas A&M-Kingsville, Texas A&M International, Texas Lutheran (women only), Texas State (men only) and Trinity.

Fourteen high school races will be held on Saturday, kicking off with the Gold Division races at 8:30 (girls) and 8:55 (boys) a.m. More than 3,200 athletes from 150 different schools will be represented in the prep races at the course that serves as the site of the UIL Region IV Championship in November.

The UTSA men placed six runners in the top 10 to win last year’s team title, 25-55, ahead of runner-up Texas State. Current sophomore Brandon Chiuminetta led the way with a fourth-place time of 15:40, while junior Corey Vargas and sophomore Dominick Zucconi both clocked 15:44 for sixth and seventh, respectively.

Junior Dana Mecke, already a two-time Southland Conference Athlete of the Week this season, won her first-ever individual collegiate race with a time of 18:00 to lead the Roadrunner women to the team crown, 26-68, ahead of Texas State last September. Sophomores Jayde James (10th, 20:07) and Baylee Holder (11th, 20:10) also finished in the top 11, as UTSA won its second consecutive Romo Classic title.
