SAN ANTONIO ? The UTSA Convocation Center’s second major renovation project in the past two years is nearly complete, as a new playing surface will make its debut at the volleyball match against Georgia on Wednesday, Sept. 10.
Work crews began removing the old hardwood floor in early August and two weeks later, a new maple playing surface totaling approximately 7,200 square feet in size was installed. During the last three weeks, contractors put in place several layers of finish and a sparkling paint job featuring UTSA Athletics’ new logos and word marks. Crews also cut out the two retired UTSA Rowdy logos from the floor to save for future use.
Last summer, more than 4,000 chairback seats were installed to both upper and lower levels of the Convo, home to the UTSA basketball and volleyball teams since 1981. The facility also has hosted a multitude of special events, including commencement ceremonies for UTSA and local high schools, the 2004 Nike Hoops Summit, the 2002 WBCA All-Star Game, the 1998 NORCECA World Volleyball Championships and the 1993 United States Olympic Festival Volleyball Tournament.
