Roadrunners end Mizuno Invitational with Saturday split

Sophomore Kendra Rowland had 23 kills as UTSA split a pair of matches on Saturday.

HOUSTON ? UTSA split a pair of matches against Louisiana-Lafayette (25-22, 25-11, 25-19) and Michigan (19-25, 13-25, 12-25) on Saturday at the Mizuno Invitational at Rice University and finished the season-opening tournament with a 1-2 record.

Sophomore outside hitter Kendra Rowland had 13 kills and hit .286 to lead the Roadrunners to their first victory of the season in a three-set victory against the Ragin' Cajuns. Sophomores Valorie Rogers and Jordan White and freshman Elise Huskey collected seven winners apiece. Freshman Kelsey Jewasko had her second strong performance along the back row, as she racked up 19 digs.

After holding on for a 25-22 first-set victory, UTSA hit .355 en route to a convincing 14-point win in set two. The Birds then closed things out with a 25-19 triumph in the third and final set.

In the nightcap, the Wolverines hit 44 percent and rolled to their second victory in as many days. Rowland had 10 kills to lead the Roadrunners.

UTSA returns to the court next weekend when it travels to Waco for the Baylor Classic. The Roadrunners begin tournament play at 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 5, against Weber State.
