SAN ANTONIO ? Junior Dana Mecke and freshman Kayla Pratt teamed up to win the women’s race Friday evening at the UTSA Opener held at Olmos Park. Freshman Layne Nixon and junior transfer Jake Orndorff and finished fourth to lead a trio of Roadrunners in the top six of the men’s race on a muggy evening in the Alamo City.
Mecke and Pratt combined to cover the women’s 4x1,200-meter relay course in a time of 39:05, finishing comfortably ahead of the runner-up time of 34:15 turned in by Anne Ronoh and Sheila Salil of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
The only other UTSA duo competing on the women’s side ? sophomores Baylee Holder and Jayde James ? clocked a 36:14 to finish fifth out of 10 teams.
The three UTSA men’s relay teams ran as a pack and finished that way. Nixon and Orndorff covered the 4xmile trek in 40:07 to place fourth, while sophomore Al Johnson and freshman Ivan Garca were close behind in fifth with a 40:13 clocking. Junior Corey Vargas and freshman Albert Cardenas ( were sixth in 40:20.
Arisel Perez and Scott Vance of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi won the men’s relay in 39:05.
The Roadrunners make the short trip up I-35 to compete in the Texas State Invitational set for next Saturday, Sept. 6.
