HOUSTON ? Rice hit 40.2 percent and used a balanced offensive attack to sweep UTSA (25-13, 25-15, 25-18) in Friday's season opener at the Mizuno Invitational at Rice University.

The Owls slammed home 46 winners and had just seven errors in 97 attacks and were aided by a Roadrunners defense that was held without a block in the one-hour, 22-minute match.

Rice was led by the tandem of Ashleigh McCord and Karyn Morgan, whoboth had a match-high nine kills. Meredith Schamun had 35 assists and Tracey Lam ledthree Owls in double figures with a match-best 20 digs.

Freshman outside hitter Elise Huskey led UTSA with nine kills and hit .562 in her collegiate debut, while sophomore outside hitter Kendra Rowland added seven winners. Freshman libero Kelsey Jewasko had a team-leading 14 digs and Huskey recorded seven.

The Roadrunners wrap up tournament play on Saturday with an 10 a.m. match against Louisiana-Lafayette and a 2 p.m. tilt against Michigan (please note schedule changes due to Hurricane Gustav).
