Former Roadrunner Lloyd Williams named head coach at Rogers State

CLAREMORE, Okla. ? Former UTSA men’s basketball player and assistant coach Lloyd Williams has been promoted to head coach at Rogers State, the school announced Tuesday.

Williams served as associate head coach in 2007-08, the inaugural season for the Hillcats, an NAIA Division I member of the Sooner Athletic Conference. His wife, the former Amy Gusso, is entering her second season as head coach of the women’s basketball team at Rogers State.

UTSA’s all-time leader in assists (536), steals (237) and starts (94), Williams lettered for the Roadrunners in 1996-00. He earned second-team All-Southland Conference honors as a senior after posting 11.3 points per game, an 81.0-percent free-throw percentage, 62 3-pointers, 159 assists and 68 steals. UTSA averaged 15 wins a year during his four seasons and captured the 1999 SLC Tournament Championship, earning an NCAA First Round appearance against eventual National Champion Connecticut.

Williams earned his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology from UTSA in 2001 and served as a volunteer assistant coach for the Roadrunners during the 2002-03 season. The Garland, Texas, native was an assistant coach at Stillwater (Okla.) High School in 2003-04 before returning to UTSA as a full-time assistant coach for the 2004-05 campaign.
