San Antonio named finalist to host NCAA Women's Final Four 2012-16

INDIANAPOLIS ? The NCAA announced Wednesday that San Antonio is one of eight finalist cities in the bid to host the Women’s Final Four in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 or 2016. This comes as welcome news to the San Antonio Local Organizing Committee, which hosted the 2008 NCAA Men’s Final Four in the Alamodome last April. SALOC is already slated to host the 2010 Women’s Final Four.

“The NCAA Women’s Final Four is a terrific event and one in which we have a lot of pride in being a part of.," UTSA Athletics Director Lynn Hickey said. "As the host for the 2010 NCAA Division I Women’s National Championship, we are thrilled to know we have another opportunity to bring it back again in the future. San Antonio loves NCAA basketball and we will continue to invite their Championships into our community as long as we can.”

The San Antonio Local Organizing Committee, which is a partnership between the City of San Antonio, the San Antonio Sports Foundation and UTSA , has a strong history of hosting successful NCAA Championships including three Men’s Final Fours (1998, 2004, 2008), one Women’s Final Four (2002) and one Women’s Division I Volleyball Championship (2005). It has also hosted several regional basketball tournaments.

Other finalists include Columbus, Ohio; Dallas, Denver, Indianapolis, Nashville, New Orleans and Tampa Bay. Site visits to each city will be conducted in September and October, 2008. Following the site visits to each prospective city, the finalists will participate in a presentation session with the committee in mid-November. The 2012-16 Women’s Final Four sites will be announced in mid-November.

SALOC also submitted a bid to host the Men’s Final Four during 2012-16. The NCAA expects to make an announcement about the finalists for the men’s championships later this month.
