FRISCO ? The UTSA women’s soccer program was picked second and third, respectively, in the 2008 Southland Conference Preseason Sports Information Directors and Coaches polls, the league office announced on Wednesday.
“It’s good to see that we were ranked in the top three of both polls.” head coach Steve Ballard said. “It's exactly where I thought we were going to be voted based on how we did a year ago. Our goal is to finish among the leaders of the Southland Conference.”
Ballard’s squad was selected second in the SID poll with 66 points and one first-place vote. The Roadrunners finished 10 points behind preseason favorite and defending SLC Tournament Champion Stephen F. Austin, while McNeese State was third and Northwestern State was fourth. Southeastern Louisiana edged out Texas State by one point to end up fifth. Central Arkansas and Sam Houston State were chosen seventh and eighth, and Nicholls and Lamar rounded out the final spots.
In the Coaches poll, UTSA was tabbed third (66), eight points behind favorite McNeese State, while the Ladyjacks were picked nine points ahead of the Roadrunners. The Lady Demons were selected fourth with 59 points and the Lady Lions rounded out the top five, while the final five were projected in the same order as the SID rankings.
The Roadrunners travel to Houston for a two-match road swing at Houston on Friday, Aug. 22, and Rice two days later.
