UTSA soccer kicks off preseason drills on Wednesday

Steve Ballard

SAN ANTONIO ? The UTSA soccer team opens 2008 preseason camp on Wednesday morning at the UTSA Recreational Sports Complex.

“We’re excited about our team and the players we have coming back.” Ballard said. “Our returners have worked hard this off season and also looking forward to see what our new players will have for us.”

UTSA has finished in the top three of Southland Conference standings in its first two seasons. The Roadrunners ended 2007 with a 9-9-2 overall record and 6-2-1 mark and a third-place finish in the league.

Head coach Steve Ballard welcomes back an experienced team with 17 letterwinners, including nine starters, and 16 newcomers. Among the returneers are first-team All-SLC honorees sophomore Allison Dillon, the league’s 2007 Freshman of the Year, and junior Ezinne Okpo. Also coming back are juniors Veronica Najera and Chelsea Zimmerman, who were selected second-team All-SLC a year ago.

UTSA kicks off its season with a two-match road swing that begins at Houston on Aug. 22 and Rice two days later.
