Volleyball honored for academic excellence by American Volleyball Coaches Association

LEXINGTON, Ky. ? The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced Tuesday that the UTSA volleyball program earned the AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2007-08 academic year.

"This is a tremendous honor for our program," head coach Laura Neugebauer-Groff said. "We have always put an emphasis on succeeding in the classroom, as well as the court, and this group was rewarded for all their hard work this past year. I am very proud of what they accomplished."

The Roadrunners posted a cumulative 3.38 grade-point average last year. Leading the way was freshman Dana Mecke, who posted a perfect 4.00 gpa in both semesters. Every player had a 3.00 gpa or better in the spring and 10 of the 13 did so in the fall.

The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team gpa on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team gpa on a 5.0 scale.
