Williams to compete at United States Olympic Trials this weekend

Teddy Williams

SAN ANTONIO ? Sophomore Teddy Williams looks to carry the momentum from his All-America second season as a Roadrunner into this weekend when he is scheduled to compete in the 100 meters at the United States Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore.

The Tyler native will begin his quest for a berth on this year's Olympic team at 4:30 p.m. (CT) on Saturday in the qualifying heats. The quarterfinals are slated for 7:01 p.m. later that night. Semifinal action is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on Sunday and the final will be run at 6:49 p.m. that evening. His UTSA-record time of 10.16 ranks 27th in the field of 32. The top three finishers, provided they have met the Olympic “A” standard, willrepresent the United States at the XXIX Olympiad inBeijing, China.

Williams earned All-America honors in the

100m earlier this month following his seventh-place performance at the 2008 NCAA Outdoor

Championships. The fifth All-American in school history had a year to

remember, as he set a total of four school records ? 60m (6.66), 100m

(10.16), 200m (20.60) and 400m relay (39.84) in addition to winning the

NCAA Midwest Regional 100m title, the SLC Outdoor 100m, 200m and 400m

relay crowns and the SLC Indoor 60m gold medal. Williams, who led 1-2-3

finishes in both short sprints at the conference's outdoor meet, was

named the league's Outstanding Outdoor Track Performer. He also set a

new SLC record in the 60m dash in January and competed at the NCAA

Indoor Championships two months later.

Williams is the just the second UTSA male athlete to compete at the Trials in school history. Three-time All-American Leonard Byrd ran in the 400m at the previous three U.S. Olympic Trials (1996, 2000, 2004).

The 100m races may be seen from 7-8 p.m. (CT) on Saturday and 6-7 p.m. the following evening on NBC. For complete meet information andresults, please click here.
