Etheredge inks free agent deal with Chicago White Sox


Senior Zach Etheredge is the 11th Roadrunner to sign a free agent deal in school history.

SAN ANTONIO ? Senior catcher Zach Etheredge signed a free agent contract with the Chicago White Sox this past weekend and will begin his professional career on Tuesday night with the organization's Rookie-level affiliate, the Great Falls Voyagers.

"I'm glad the White Sox organization has given me an opportunity to prove myself," Etheredge said on Monday. "That's all I wanted after going undrafted. I want to thank all the coaches, my teammates, UTSA athletics department and my family for all the support they have given me the last five years. They have been very instrumental in getting me to this point."

The Boerne native posted a .267 batting average with 12 doubles, a triple, fivehomers and 34 RBIs in his final campaign in navy blue and orange. He once againprovided steady defense behind the plate, not allowing one passedball, committing just five errors (.987 fielding percentage) andthrowing out 23.1 percent of would-be base stealers.

Etheredge left UTSA ranked among the top 10 on the school's career charts in at-bats (No. 3/726), doubles (t-No. 5/46), games started (No. 6/192), RBIs (t-No. 6/127) and home runs (t-No. 9/20).

His signing pushes the program's all-time number of players advancing to the MLB's minor league level to 28, 15 of which have come under the direction of eighth-year head coach Sherman Corbett.
