SAN ANTONIO ? Sophomore Teddy Williams and junior Tommy Wolfe both earned invitations on Tuesday to next week's NCAA Outdoor Championships in Des Moines, Iowa. The four-day meet gets underway on Wednesday, June 11, at Drake Stadium and runs through Saturday, June 14.
One of the nation's top young sprinters, Williams will compete at the national meet for the second time this year. The Tyler native, who participated in the 60 meters at the NCAA Indoor Championships in March, is scheduled to run in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes.
Last weekend, Williams won UTSA's first-ever NCAA Midwest Regional Championship when he crossed the tape in 10.25 in winning the 100 meters in Lincoln, Neb. His school-record time of 10.16, set in a gold medal performance at last month's Southland Conference Championships, ranks eighth in the country entering the meet. The preliminary heats are scheduled to be run at 5:45 p.m. on June 11 with semifinal action slated to take place at 7:10 later that night. The final will be run at 8:45 p.m. on June 13.
Williams also earned a spot in the 29-man 200-meters field. His UTSA-record time of 20.60, also set in a first-place effort at the SLC Outdoor, stands 14th nationally. The prelims are scheduled to be run at 5:10 p.m. on June 12 and the semifinals are set for 6:45 that night. Thefinal is slated to be contested at 3:45 p.m. on June 14.
Both short sprint finals will be televised live by CBS Sports (100m on CBS College Sports/200m CBS Sports).
Wolfe, whoscored an NCAA provisional and career-best 7,395 points (No. 2 UTSA history) in winning the SLC Outdoor Championship, is one of 26 athletes who will compete in the two-day decathlon. Competition begins at 10 a.m. on June 11 with the first five events (100m, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400 meters). The event concludes the following day with the 110m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500m. The first athleteto win both the league's multi-events in the same season, the Raymondville native owns the 16th-best point total in the country entering the meet. He is the second member of his family to participate in the event in the last three years, as his older brother, Bryan, scored 7,111 points in an 11th-place performance at the 2006 national meet in Sacramento, Calif.
The top eight American-born finishers will earn All-America honors.
