UTSA men to head to Huntsville for Southland Conference Outdoor Championships

SAN ANTONIO ? The UTSA men's track & field team begins its quest for the second Southland Conference Outdoor Championship in school history and first indoor/outdoor sweep in a season this weekend when it compete at the SLC Championships in Huntsville.

The three-day meet, which will take place at the York Track & Field Complex on the campus of Sam Houston State, begins at 9:30 a.m. on Friday with the first five events of the decathlon. Selected field events (hammer/javelin) then commence at 10 a.m. and the 10,000 meters will be contested at 9:30 p.m. The final five decathlon events (9 a.m.) and field competition (1 p.m.) continues on Saturday and run through Sunday evening, while the preliminary heats of the running events begin with the 1,500 meters at 5 p.m. on Saturday and run through Sunday night.

The Roadrunners come into the meet with four marks that lead the conference. Sophomore Teddy Williams owns the top marks in the 100 and 200 meters at 10.38 and 21.07, respectively. Meanwhile, senior WIll Vese has clocked the league's fastest 110-meter hurdles time, a school-record 13.81 set at the Hurricane Invitational on March 22. UTSA's 400-meter relay squad's program-record 39.84 set at April's Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays as stood as the top clocking for more than a month. All told, the Roadrunners have 13 performances that rank among the top three in nine events.

Eight athletes and the 400m relay have combined to post 11 NCAA Midwest Regional marks so far this year and three Roadrunners ? sophomore Alton St. Rose (triple jump), Vese and junior Tommy Wolfe (pole vault) ? have set school records this spring.

Since joining the SLC in 1992, UTSA has captured the 2001 outdoor team

championship and placed third or higher five times, including back-to-back runner-up finishes the past two years. The Roadrunners have collected a total of 32 individual titles and a quartet of relay crowns in 16 years of competition.
