HUNTSVILLE ? Freshman Danye Holmes tossed her third straight shutout and sophomore Kelly Cato hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning to lead UTSA past Sam Houston State, 1-0, in game one of a Southland Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Bearkat Stadium. Amanda Lindsey’s solo homer in the sixth inning of game two helped lift the Bearkats to a 2-1 victory over the Roadrunners in the nightcap.

With the split, UTSA moved to 24-24 overall and is now tied with UT Arlington, which swept Central Arkansas, at 19-10 for second place in the league standings. Sam Houston improved to 30-29 and 15-14. Stephen F. Austin (18-10) remained a half game back of the Roadrunners after splitting with Northwestern State.

Holmes shut down the Bearkats in extending her scoreless innings streak to 24-plus. She struck out five and allowed just five hits in running her record to 8-1 in SLC play and 9-6 overall.

Cato sent the first pitch from Brandi Crnkovic to the right center field fence, as the ball bounced off the top and over to give UTSA a 1-0 lead. Holmes worked a perfect bottom frame to send the Roadrunners to their sixth win in the last seven games.

Crnkovic fanned seven, but walked four and gave up four hits in falling to 15-17.

Game two started off with more runs combined in the first inning ? two ? than all of the opener.

Cato drove in her second run of the day with a bases-loaded bloop single to left center to plate junior Leanne Risberg, who doubled for the sixth time this year.

The Bearkats knotted the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the frame, as Haley Wigington singled and scored on a one-out double down the right field line by Morgan Mikulin.

Mikulin, the Sam Houston starter, and senior Amanda Nikolenko then settled into the second pitchers’ duel of the day. Nikolenko retired nine in a row until Lindsey lifted her second round tripper of the season just over the left field fence to give the Bearkats a 2-1 lead.

Crnkovic came on for a perfect seventh to earn her fifth save of the season. Mikulin ran her record to 15-12, allowing one unearned run on four hits in six innings. Nikolenko was tagged with the tough-luck loss, striking out three and allowing two runs on four hits to fall to 11-15.

Game three is set for 1 p.m. on Sunday.
