Chovanec named Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week

Senior Bradley Chovanec picked up his second SLC Pitcher of the Week award on Monday.

FRISCO ? Senior right-hander Bradley Chovanec was named Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced on Monday. It was the second weekly award for Chovanec this year and the seventh for a Roadrunner overall (four pitchers/three hitters).

Chovanec, the only hurler in the league to be honored twice this year, held Texas State to just four singles in seven strong innings for his conference-leading ninth win of the year (t-No. 2 UTSA single-season chart) in UTSA's 3-0 victory at Texas State on Friday night. The Burton native was outstanding in his final regular season start of the year. He struck out four of the first five hitters he faced and never looked back. Chovanec finished the outing with a half dozen punchouts and walked just one in the 99-pitch gem. He allowed just four runners to reach scoring position and was backed by a solid defense.

Chovanec is 9-3 with a 4.82 ERA in 15 appearances (13 starts) in his final season in navy blue and orange. The 2008 ESPN The Magazine first-team Academic All-District VI choice also sports a 59-to-19 strikeout-to-walk ratio. In addition to leading the league in victories and shutouts (two), he ranks second in innings pitched (93.1) and complete games (three).

UTSA (38-17) returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Huntsville for the four-day SLC Tournament. The top-seeded Roadrunners will square of against No. 8 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (22-31-1) at 4 p.m. Chovanec is slated to start the opener against the Islanders.
