UTSA set for Southland Conference Outdoor Championships

SAN ANTONIO ? The UTSA women’s track and field team will travel to

Huntsville to compete in the Southland Conference Outdoor Track and

Field Championships hosted by Sam Houston State on Friday-Sunday, May

9-11, at York Track and Field Complex.

The combined events get underway at 9:30 a.m. Friday and continue

through Saturday, while the field events kick off with the hammer throw

at 10 a.m. Friday and run through Sunday. The first running event is

the 10,000 meters final at 8:45 p.m. Friday, with most of the

preliminary rounds on Friday evening, followed by the finals beginning

at 5 p.m. Sunday.

The Roadrunners finished fourth at last year’s meet behind SLC Athlete

of the Year and Outstanding Field Performer Ryanne Dupree’s meet-high

39 1/2 points. Dupree, now a volunteer coach at UTSA, won the

heptathlon, long jump and 100m hurdles, finished second in the high

jump and joined current senior Brittany Epps and juniors Ashley Jackson

and Shanelle Slaughter on the third-place 4x100m relay team. UTSA

returns 27 1/2 of the 93 points it scored last year. Texas State is the

defending champion.

UTSA has 18 marks that rank in the top 10 on the conference performance

list entering the meet, including SLC Indoor 800m champion sophomore

Dana Mecke, who appears in the top three in both the 800m and 1,500m.

Since joining the SLC in 1992, UTSA has captured five outdoor team

championships (1992, 93, 94, 96, 97) and finished fifth or higher 12

times. The Roadrunners have collected 48 individual or relay titles, 20

superlatives (i.e., Athlete of the Year) and seven meet records.
