Lions defeat Roadrunners in Sunday series finale, 4-2

(Southeastern Louisiana staff report)

Junior James Keithley extended his season-long hitting streak to 19 games on Sunday.

HAMMOND, La. ? Southeastern Louisiana left-hander Wade Miley struck out eight batters over 7.2 innings and Ty Summerlin launched his fourth home run of the season, a two-run shot, to help Southeastern Louisiana avoid a three-game sweep with a 4-2 win against UTSA on Sunday at Alumni Field.

Miley, who started Friday's contest and threw two innings before the game was suspended due to rain, surrendered just two runs on nine hits and walked just two.

He allowed a run in the first after a pair of singles by junior shortstop James Keithley and sophomore designated hitter Tim Palincsar put runners at second and third with nobody out. A Summerlin fielding error on a potential double play grounder off the bat of junior center fielder Michael Rockett put the Roadrunners ahead, 1-0. However, Miley picked up his first strikeout victim of the afternoon, getting senior first baseman Trent Lockwood swinging, before coaxing a double play ball from junior left fielder Jose Hernandez before any more damage could be done.

After being shut out in their previous two games, the Lions looked to strike back quickly and they did just that.

Summerlin atoned for his defensive miscue in the top of the frame by launching a bomb over the right center field wall to make it 2-1.

It was a lead the Lions would not relinquish.

Miley pitched out of jams in the second and third to keep Southeastern in front. He picked off freshman right fielder Tyler Carpenter in the second and got some help from his defense in the third. After reaching on a single, Keithley was thrown out at home trying to score from first on a double off the bat of Rockett. Left fielder Xavier Qualls threw a strike to Summerlin, whose relay arrived in plenty of time for catcher Matthew Schexnayder to apply the tag that ended the inning.

The Lions added some much-needed insurance in the third, as Cass Hargis doubled to the gap in right center and advanced to third when Keithley bobbled the relay throw. An RBI single by Qualls made it 3-1.

After Miley turned UTSA away empty-handed in the fourth by striking out consecutive batters with runners on the corners, the Southeastern struck again in the bottom of the inning. After third baseman Casey Summerlin reached on an error by Lockwood and advanced to second on a walk by Schexnayder, Hargis singled up the middle to plate the elder Summerlin and give the Lions a three-run cushion.

After a scoreless fifth, the Roadrunners managed to get a run off of Miley in the sixth on an RBI double by senior catcher Zach Etheredge. However, Miley set the Roadrunners down in order in the seventh and induced a double-play ball from Lockwood in the eighth before handing things over to reliever Ryan Collins.

Collins went the rest of the way and retired all four batters he faced for his fourth save of the season.

UTSA is back in action next weekend when it travels to Natchitoches, La., for a three-game series at Northwestern State.
