SAN ANTONIO ? Freshman Dany? Holmes tossed her second straight shutout to help lead the UTSA softball team to a 1-0 victory over Stephen F. Austin on a breezy Sunday afternoon at Roadrunner Field.

The win moved the Roadrunners, 23-23 overall, into second place at 18-9, a half game ahead of the Ladyjacks, who fell to 17-9 in league play and 32-20 overall.

In a battle of freshman left-handers, Holmes and Monika Convington of SFA, Holmes held the Ladyjacks without a run for the second consecutive game. The Sugar Land native struck out five and allowed just three walks and two hits ? one an infield single ? in running her record to 8-6 overall and 7-1 in conference play.

Sophomore Kelly Cato led the Roadrunners at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and scoring the only run of the game. Holmes and sophomore Rudi Cantu and Cassie Miller had a hit apiece.

The only run of the game came home with the help of a misplay in center field in the bottom of the second inning. Cato lined a two-out double to the fence in right center and scored when freshman Kristin Kappler’s fly ball to center field was mishandled by Benet Higgs.

Meanwhile, Holmes cruised through the SFA batting order for the most part. She did not allow a hit until Monica Hirsch dropped down a bunt single in front of the pitching circle in the top of the fifth inning.

SFA threatened in the top of the sixth, as Kendal Harper led off with a single through the left side of the infield, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kari Hugie and advanced to third on a fly ball to right by Jessica Tullos. Briana Bishop then bounced a ball on one hop over Holmes’ head, but the pitcher fielded the ball with her back to home plate and threw to first just in time to nab Bishop and keep the run from scoring.

Holmes worked a 1-2-3 seventh, getting Kim Daley on a strikeout to end the game. She now has allowed just one earned run in her last three starts, all complete games, and has dropped her ERA to a miniscule 1.29 in SLC contests.

Covington struck out three and gave up just one unearned run on five hits in falling to 17-10.

It marked the final home game for UTSA’s five seniors ? Kim Chavez, Kourtney Jones, Janeille Nickels, Amanda Nikolenko and Lindsay Perry.

The Roadrunners close out the regular season with a three-game series at Sam Houston State next weekend in Huntsville. Texas State (23-4) clinched the regular season title and No. 1 seed for the SLC Tournament, while UTSA and SFA, which hosts last-place Northwestern State next weekend, are vying for the two-seed and other first-round bye.
