SAN ANTONIO ? Freshman Danye Holmes tossed a four-hit shutout and helped her own cause with a solo home run to help lead the UTSA softball team to a 2-0 victory over Stephen F. Austin in game two of a Southland Conference doubleheader on Saturday at Roadrunner Field.
Monika Covington tossed a five-hit shutout in game one to help the Ladyjacks earn a 9-0 win over the Roadrunners, as the teams split the twinbill.
The conference race stayed tight as SFA (32-19) moved to 17-8 in league play and remained in second place, just a half game ahead of UTSA (22-23), which improved to 17-9. Texas State won both games of a doubleheader against Sam Houston State to remain in first place at 22-4, while UT Arlington used two victories over Southeastern Louisiana to inch closer to the top three at 16-10.
Holmes struck out six and allowed just four hits and two walks in her first shutout of the year, running her record to 7-6 overall and 6-1 in league play. She also blasted her team-leading eighth long ball of the season in the fifth inning in going 2-for-3 at the plate.
Senior Kourtney Jones provided Holmes with all the offense she would need with her second round-tripper, a solo blast to right center in the second. Sophomore Cassie Miller joined Holmes in the two-hit club, while sophomores Rudi Cantu and Kelly Cato had a hit a piece.
Lauren Luetge was charged with the loss after giving up a run on six hits in three innings in falling to 11-4.
Covington held the Roadrunner bats in check in the opener, striking out six and allowing just five hits and three walks in moving to 17-9 on the season.
Moriah Davis led a 12-hit attack for the Ladyjacks with a 3-for-3 showing at the plate, while Benet Higgs, Monica Hirsch and Kendal Harper collected two hits apiece.
A sacrifice fly by Kim Daley plated Briana Bishop with the first run of the day in the top of the second inning to give SFA a 1-0 lead.
The Ladyjacks struck for five runs on six hits in the third, highlighted by a two-run double from Jessica Tullos. SFA took advantage of two UTSA errors to score three unearned runs in the fourth, providing Covington with more than enough run support in the 9-0 win.
Cantu, Miller, Jones, senior Lindsay Perry and junior Leanne Risberg registered a hit apiece for UTSA. Senior Amanda Nikolenko (11-14) allowed six runs on eight hits in the loss.
Game three is set for noon Sunday.
