NACOGDOCHES ? The No. 3-seeded UTSA men’s tennis team advanced to thesemifinal round of the Southland Conference Tournament with a 4-0 victory againstNo. 6 seed Nicholls State in first-round action on Friday at the SFA TennisCenter.
The Roadrunners (10-11) made quick work of the Colonels(13-8) in advancing to the semifinals for theninth consecutive season, all under head coach Oliver Trittenwein.
UTSA grabbed the doubles point, as junior Robin Fernandesand freshman Max Stratmann combined for an 8-4 win against Sami Mouine and AlexGasca Silay at No. 2. Senior Adam Becker and junior Andre Moreira downedRadu Ionescu and Vlap Popa, 8-6, at No. 1 to give the Roadrunners an early 1-0 advantage.
It took only three straight-sets singles matches to determinethe winner. Fernandes dispatched Popa at No. 2, 6-2, 6-3, and freshman DanielMoreiras took out Rohan Shetty at No. 3, 6-1, 6-4. Sophomore Rodrigo Morgadoscored a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Ionescu at No. 1, as UTSA clinched the match.
The Roadrunners, who have made three straight SLC TournamentChampionship match appearances, will face second-seed UT Arlington at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
