DES MOINES, Iowa ? The sprint medley relay team of senior Brittany Epps, junior Ashley Jackson and sophomores Jessica Jones and Dana Mecke finished sixth on Saturday at the 99th Drake Relays in the only action of the day for the UTSA women’s track & field team.
The quartet combined to clock a 3:59.35 to place fourth in their section and sixth overall in the 18-team field at one of the country’s top annual track meets. Epps gave the Roadrunners the lead with a 23.8, 200-meter leadoff leg, but the fast section made up the ground through the second deuce leg. Jones circled in 55.5 for her 400m leg and Mecke anchored 800m in 2:13.
Western Michigan won the race in 3:49.07, followed by Arkansas (3:53.19), Missouri (3:57.00) in UTSA’s section and Ohio State (3:58.51) and UC Riverside (3:58.76), which were the winners in the other two sections.
“Overall, we had a good meet even though we weren’t entered in a lot of different events,” head coach James Blackwood said. “Brittany gave us a great lead, but we knew the other teams in our section were very good, and they made up some ground on us. It was a solid performance against some very good track programs, so I’m proud of them.
“We always love coming to Drake. It’s a great event with great fans, plus it’s the site of the NCAA Outdoor meet in June. We’ll take next week off and get ready for conference now.”
The Roadrunners are off until the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships, which are scheduled for May 9-11 in Huntsville.
