Roadrunners hammer Bearkats, 14-4, on Saturday afternoon

SAN ANTONIO ? The UTSA baseball team collected its sixth win in a row with a 14-4 rout against Sam Houston State on Saturday in Southland Conference action at Roadrunners Field.

The Roadrunners (31-12, 16-4 SLC) got a solid pitching performance from junior right-hander Bradley Chovanec (7-2), who picked up his seventh win of the season. Chovanec went 7.1 innings, allowed four runs on eight hits and fanned four.

Junior Aaron Powell led the offensive attack going 3-for-4 with a homer and four RBIs. Senior catcher Zach Etheredge, junior shortstop James Keithley and senior first basemen Trent Lockwood collected two hits apiece. Lockwood also tallied three RBIs on the day.

Dallas Gallant saw his record fall to 4-3, as he suffered the loss for the Bearkats (26-17, 12-8 SLC).

Sam Houston State jumped to a 1-0 lead in the top fourth when Todd Sebek led off with a single and advanced to third on a balk and sacrifice bunt by Keith Stein. Ryan Trevino then plated Sebek with a base hit.

UTSA responded with two runs in the bottom half of the frame when Powell belted a two-run shot over the right center field wall giving the Roadrunners a 2-1 edge.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Roadrunners broke open the game with six runs on five hits and pair of Bearkats errors to take a commanding 8-1 lead and never looked back.

The Birds added a pair of runs one inning later, as Keithley’s triple highlighted the inning. Sam Houston State scored three runs in the next two innings to pull within six, but the Roadrunners sealed the game in the bottom of the eighth with four runs en route to run-rule triumph. Sophomore Tim Palincsar capped off the four-run inning with a two-run blast over the center field wall.

The series concludes at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
