NACOGDOCHES ? The UTSA men’s tennis team advanced to the 2008 Southland Conference Tournament Championship Match for the fourth consecutive year with a 4-0 win over No. 2 seed UT Arlington on Saturday afternoon at the SFA Tennis Complex.
The Roadrunners evened their season record to 11-11, while the Mavericks ended their year at 9-13.
UTSA opened the match by winning the doubles point. Senior Adam Becker and junior Andre Moreira got things started for the Roadrunners with an 8-3 win at the No. 1 spot. Junior Robin Fernandes and freshman Max Stratmann then clinched the point with an 8-3 victory against Hugo Taracido and Gonzalo Bienzobas at the No. 2 slot.
In singles action, Fernandes gave UTSA a 2-0 lead after defeating Taracido in straight sets (6-4, 6-2) at the No. 3 position. Stratmann put the Roadrunners up three when he came off the court with a 6-3, 6-1 victory. Freshman Daniel Moreiras then clinched a trip to the final with his 7-6, 6-0 win over Bienzobas at No. 5.
The Roadrunners will face top seed Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
