Lockwood named Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week on Monday

Senior Trent Lockwood was named National Player of the Week and SLC Co-Hitter of the Week on Monday.

TUSCON, Ariz. ?Senior Trent Lockwood's big weekend at Northwestern State has earned him nationwide recognition for the second time in the last three weeks, as he was one of three players selected as Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week, Collegiate Baseball announced on Monday.

Lockwood, who previously collected the award on March 31, is the Roadrunners' third honoree this year and fourth in the program's 17-year history. Junior Michael Rockett was honored on March 3 and Mark Schramek earned the program's inaugural weekly accolade six years ago (April 22, 2002).

The Groesbeck native, who also shared Southland Conference Hitter of the Week honors on Monday, powered UTSA to a three-game sweep in Natchitoches, La., last weekend that vaulted it into sole possession of first place in the conference standings (squad is 11-4 in league play).

In a series that saw the Roadrunners outscore the Demons by 18 runs (33-15), the preseason first-team All-SLC first baseman was the catalyst, as he hit .538 (7-for-13) with four home runs and 13 RBIs. The 2007 SLC Newcomer of the Year also registered a whopping 1.462 slugging percentage on the strength of 19 total bases and reached base at a .625 clip, as he was intentionally walked three times.

Lockwood opened the weekend by going 3-for-4 with a three-run homer and five RBIs in UTSA's 10-4 victory on Friday night. He followed that performance with a pair of hits, a long ball (three-run shot) and five more RBIs in the Roadrunners' 11-9 win on Saturday. Lockwood then wrapped up his impressive three days with two bombs and three RBIs in the 12-2 triumph in the series finale.

A member of the 2008 Wallace Award (nation's top player) watch list, he is hitting .326 with a team-leading nine homers and league-best 48 RBIs for the 24-11 Roadrunners, who have won six of their last seven contests (all on the road) and 10 of 13 overall.

Lockwood has knocked eight balls out of the park, recorded 26 RBIs, hit .415 (17-for-41) and posted a 1.024 slugging percentage (42 total bases) in his last 11 games.

UTSA concludes its season-long nine-game road trip on Tuesday when it begins a two-game, non-conference series at Lamar (20-14). First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. and Wednesday's finale is slated for a 3 p.m. start.
