St. Rose sets school record, qualifies for NCAA Midwest Regional at Saturday's Javelina Open

Sophomore Alton St Rose won the triple jump with a UTSA-record and NCAA Regional-qualifying mark of 49-2 ? on Saturday.

KINGSVILLE ? Sophomore Alton St. Rose broke UTSA's triple jump record for the third time this season and secured a berth at next month's NCAA Midwest Regional in winning the Javelina Open Championship on Saturday.

The Houston native skipped to a wind-aided mark of 49-2 ? (15.00m) to break the standard of 48-10 ? (14.89m) he set at the Victor Lopez Bayou Classic two weeks ago. It was a just month ago that St. Rose leaped 48-8 ? (14.84m) in winning the season-opening UTSA Relays title. That broke the record he registered at last year's Southland Conference Championships (wind-aided 14.63m).

He led a total of six Roadrunners who recorded first-place performances at the one-day meet.

Other winners on the day included senior Cedric Harris, junior Tommy Wolfe, sophomore Marcus Bibles and freshmen Jacob McDonald and Terrence Watson.

Harris won the 200 meters with a time of 22 flat, which was run into a stiff head wind of 3.8 m/s. Meanwhile, Watson circled the Javelina Stadium oval in 54.77 in winning the 400-meter hurdles.

In the field events, Wolfe threw the javelin 181-2 (55.21m) to capture gold for the second time this year; Bibles cleared a personal-best 6-9 (2.06m) to win the high jump title; and McDonald recorded a 15-3 (4.65m) measurement to claim first-place honors in the pole vault.

UTSA is back in action next Saturday, April 19, when it competes at the Texas Twilight in Austin.
