Jonas places second in heptathlon at ASU/Noble Relays


Freshman Aimee Jonas just missed winning the ASU/David Noble Relays heptathlon title on Friday.

SAN ANGELO ? UTSA freshman Aimee Jonas maintained her hold on second place on the final day of the heptathlon on Friday at the Angelo State/David Noble Relays, which was held at ASU Multipurpose Sports Complex.

Jonas destroyed her previous season-best of 4,193 points posted at the UTSA Relays last month, scoring 4,642 points in nearly catching New Mexico Junior College's Angela Graham for first place.

The La Vernia native entered Friday’s final three events with 2,896 points, just 63 points behind Graham. She leaped to a mark of 5.16 meters in the long jump and measured 93 feet in the javelin, but fell behind Graham, 4199-3,945, with the 800 meters remaining.

Jonas circled the track twice in a time of 2:29.59, easily winning the final event and beating Graham by more than 20 seconds. Graham added 465 points to her total for 4,664, just edging Jonas by 21 points.

Senior Kari Michalik entered the second day in fourth place with 2,640 points, but she did not compete on Friday.
