SAN ANGELO ? UTSA freshman Aimee Jonas and senior Kari Michalik are in title contention after day one of the Angelo State/David Noble Relays heptathlon competition held Thursday at the ASU Multipurpose Sports Complex.

Jonas is in second place after tallying 2,896 points through the first four events, while Michalik stands fourth with 2,640. New Mexico JC’s Angela Graham leads the 11-person field with 2,959 points.

Jonas led after the first two events, racing to the top 100-meter hurdles time of 15.09 before clearing a season-best 5-5 in the high jump, also the top mark in the field. She rounded out day one with a shot put mark of 30-5 ? and a 200m time of 26.11.

Meanwhile, Michalik was a mainstay of the top five throughout the afternoon, registering marks of 16.26 in the 100m hurdles, 5-1 ? in the high jump, 33-6 ? in the shot put and 26.86 in the deuce.

Day two of the heptathlon gets underway with the long jump at 2 p.m., followed by the javelin at 3:30 and the 800m at 5 p.m.

The three-day event continues through Saturday.
