HOUSTON ? No.10 Houston rode the right arm of Angel Shamblin, who earned a win and asave, to a doubleheader sweep of UTSA, 3-0 and 5-3, on Wednesdayevening at Cougar Stadium.
AngelShamblin struck out seven and allowed just two bunt singles in gameone, running her record to 20-2 on the season, and picked up her secondsave of the year with three strikeouts in one and one-third innings inthe nightcap.
With the wins, the Cougars improved to 34-5 overall, while the Roadrunners fell to 18-20.
JuniorLeanne Risberg was 2-for-3 and sophomore Krista Sitka hit her sixthhome run of the season to lead a nine-hit attack by UTSA in game two,as eight different players recorded a hit.
ElainaNordstrom, who was 2-for-2, gave the Cougars the early lead in game twowith a three-run blast to left field in the bottom of the third. Atwo-run double to center in the fourth by Casey Willow extended theadvantage to 5-0.
Sitka’s solo blast onto the street beyond the left-field fence put UTSA on the board in the fifth.
TheRoadrunners cut the deficit to 5-3 with a pair of runs in the sixth.Sophomore Kelly Cato doubled to left center, moved to third on agroundout by senior Lindsay Perry and scored on a ground ball to thirdby sophomore Rudi Cantu. Risberg then reached on a bad-hop single tothe shortstop and Cantu scored on a single up the middle by freshmanDanye Holmes that chased UH starter Barbie Love. Shamblin came in withthe winning run at the plate in the form of Sitka, who drilled a deepfly ball to left field that was chased down by Willow on the warningtrack.
Shamblin worked a perfect seventh to earn the save.
Holmes (5-6) allowed five runs on eight hits and struck out three in the loss.
Shamblinwas tough in game one, allowing just two hits on perfectly-placed buntsby senior Kourtney Jones, the first in the second inning which helpedput runners at second and third with one out. Shamblin induced twopop-ups to second base to get out of the jam.
JenniferKlinkert put the Cougars on the board with a solo home run to leftfield in the bottom of the second and Laurie Wagner launched her 10th round-tripper of the year in the fourth to give UH a 2-0 lead.
JessicaValis tripled to the gap in right center and scored on a ground ball tothird in the fifth to extend the Cougars’ lead to 3-0.
SeniorAmanda Nikolenko (10-12) was solid in the loss, allowing just threeruns on eight hits and striking out a pair of batters.
The Roadrunners travel to Lubbock for a doubleheader against Texas Tech on Tuesday, April 15.
