UTSA drops rubber game to College of Charleston, 9-4

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. ? The College of Charleston scored runs in each of its final four innings and posted a 9-4 come-from-behind victory against UTSA in the rubber game of a weekend three-game series on Sunday at Patriot's Point Stadium.

After the Roadrunners (9-4) scored four runs in the fifth to go up 4-3, the Cougars (10-3) tied the game in the bottom half of the frame on Clay McCord's RBI single up the middle. That hit brought home Austin Morgan, who doubled to lead off the frame.

The College of Charleston then took the lead for good one inning later when Stuart Haywood hit a sacrifice fly to left that brought home Jeremie Tice, who tripled off the right field fence with one down, with the go-ahead run.

The Cougars added an insurance run in the seventh on Michael Harrington's run-scoring double that junior left fielder Jose Hernandez lost in the sun and they tacked on three unearned runs in the eighth off sophomore closer Zach Calhoon to put the game out of reach.

Jake Goldberg (1-1) tossed 6.1 strong innings to pick up the win for C of C. Goldberg allowed just five hits, walked two and fannedeight. Pete VandenBout and Jesse Simpson combined to hold the Roadrunners scoreless the rest of the way. VandenBout struck out three in his 1.2-inning stint and SImpson fanned the side in the ninth to close things out.

The College of Charleston lit up the scoreboard first when it plated three runs on four hits in the second against UTSA starter Bradley Chovanec.

The Roadrunners responded with four unearned runs three innings later on the strength of three hits and a pair of Cougars errors.

Senior first baseman Trent Lockwood led UTSA's offense with two hits, a double and one RBI, while junior Michael Rockett added a pair of base knocks.

Tice went 3-for-4 with three run scored and Morgan added two hits for the Cougars.

Chovanec (3-1) surrendered six runs on 10 hits and walked a pair in seven innings of work.

UTSA is back in action when it begins an eight-game home stand with a doubleheader on Tuesday against Northern Illinois. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Roadrunner Field.
