UT Arlington blanks Roadrunners, 2-0, to take weekend series

Freshman Danye Holmes tossed a complete-game five-hitter and added a double at the plate on Sunday.

ARLINGTON ? Freshman Dany? Holmes tossed a complete-game five-hitter and added a double at the plate, but Cara Hulme hurled her second consecutive shutout to lead UT Arlington past UTSA, 2-0, in the rubber game of a three-game Southland Conference series on Sunday afternoon at Allan Saxe Field.

Holmes struck out two and scattered five hits, but she allowed four walks and two earned runs in falling to 3-4 on the year. The Sugar Land native was 1-for-3 with a double at the plate, but the Roadrunners (9-11, 5-4 SLC) could only muster two hits ? sophomore Krista Sitka extended her hitting streak to a season-long five games with a single ? against Hulme, who struck out 10 and allowed just one walk in improving to 3-2 on the season.

Samantha Chumchal was 2-for-2 with a double and a two-run single in the third inning to provide the only scoring of the day for either team. Her base hit up the middle scored April Clougherty, who walked, and Brittany Washington, who singled, with one out in the bottom of the third.

Rebecca Collom and Christina Allen also singled for the Mavericks (7-11, 4-5 SLC), who won a series against UTSA for the first time since 2003.

The Roadrunners host Southeastern Louisiana next weekend at Roadrunner Field.
