TUSCON, Ariz. ? Senior Trent Lockwood’s record-setting performance last week did not go unnoticed, as he was one of five players selected as Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week, Collegiate Baseball announced on Monday.
Lockwood is the second Roadrunner to be honored this month (junior Michael Rockett, March 3) and just the third to earn the award in the program's 17-year history (Mark Schramek, April 22, 2002).
The Groesbeck native was spectacular in leading UTSA to three wins in five games. The preseason first-team All-Southland Conference first baseman hit .474 (9-19) with eight runs scored, a double, four home runs and 13 RBIs. He also posted a remarkable 1.158 slugging percentage on the strength of 22 total bases and reached base in half of his 24 plate appearances.
After starting the week with an 0-for-3 performance against No. 20 Texas A&M, Lockwood exploded for nine hits in his next 16 at-bats, which was good for a .563 batting average.
Included in that total was a 4-for-5, five-run, three-homer, 9-RBIs performance on Wednesday against Prairie View A&M. That effort broke the school's single-game record for RBIs and tied the mark for long balls, runs scored and hits in an inning (two in the third), as UTSA set a new program standard for runs in a 27-4 victory.
Lockwood went on to go 5-for-11 (.455) with a double, homer and four RBIs in the weekend three-game set with UT Arlington.
He also shared SLC Hitter of the Week honors with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Trey Hernandez. It marked Lockwood's third Hitter of the Week accolade in his two seasons in navy blue and orange.
A member of the Wallace Award (nation’s top player) watch list, the 2007 SLC Newcomer of the Year is hitting .327 with a dozen doubles, five home runs and 35 RBIs for a Roadrunners offense that is hitting .329 and averaging 8.7 runs per game this year.
