HOUSTON ? Sophomore Alton St. Rose set his second UTSA triple jump record in the season's first three meets and the 400-meter relay team circled the track in a winning 40.75 to highlight the Roadrunners men's track & field team at this weekend's Victor Lopez Bayou Classic at Rice Track Stadium.
St. Rose skipped to a 48-10 ? (14.89m) in finishing second among collegians in the triple jump. It was just two weeks ago that the Houston native leaped 48-8 ? (14.84m) in winning the UTSA Relays Championship.
Meanwhile, the quartet of senior Will Vese, sophomore Teddy Williams, freshman John Mathews and senior Steven Brown passed the baton in 40.75 to capture the gold medal in the 4x1.
Williams also finished third in his first 100 meters race of the season in 10.67, while junior Gaston Griffin placed fifth in the 400 meters in 48.60.
Matthews (15.18), Vese (15.20) and freshman Robert Hart (15.40) finished 4-5-6 in the 110-meter hurdles.
The 1,600-meter team of freshman Caesar Slade, Griffin, senior Dominic Brown and freshman Terrence Watson clocked a 3:18.60, which was good enough for fifth place.
In the field, sophomore Marcus Bibles and junior Carey Evans both cleared 6-6 ? (2.00m) to place third and fourth, respectively, in the high jump, while freshmen Kyle Kaase and Lucas Neeper tied for fifth place in the pole vault with their 14-5 ? (4.40m) clearances in the pole vault. Senior Luke Johnson launched the shot put 52-11 (16.13m) to finish in fifth place.
The Roadrunners are back in action on April 2-5 when they compete at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin.
