SAN ANTONIO ? The UTSA women’s tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to Lamar on Saturday morning at the UTSA Tennis Center.
The Lady Cardinals (15-1, 6-0 SLC) grabbed the early 1-0 lead after takingtwo of the three doubles matches.
Lamar was victorious at the No. 1 spot, 8-3, but theRoadrunners (4-11, 2-4 SLC) rebounded for an 8-5 win at No. 2 and the point was to be decided at the third slot. Sophomore HollyPhillips and junior Nathalie Wallin had a 6-3 lead, but KaltrinaHarbuzi and Salina Aranda rallied for a 9-8 win to give the Lady Cards the first tally of the match.
Lamar took a commanding 3-0 lead when Mariaryeni Gutierrez and MariaGutierrez won their matches in straight sets at the No. 2 and No. 4 positions, respectively. Manijee Ashrafi clinched the match for the Lady Cardinals aftershe defeated freshman Caroline Dedering 6-4, 6-2. Junior KarenScida picked up the Roadrunners' lone win of the day when she won her team-leading ninth match of the year, a 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 triumph over Andrea Martinez at the top spot.
UTSA returns to action on Sunday when it hosts McNeese State at 10 a.m.
