SAN ANTONIO ? The UTSA men's tennis team collected a 4-3 win against Samford to end a two-match losing streak on Thursday afternoon at the UTSA Tennis Center.
The Roadrunners (6-10) won the doubles point to take the early 1-0 lead over the Bulldogs (8-5).
Samford's Hank Grant and Sam Huffman won 8-3 at the No. 2 spot against junior Robin Fernandes and sophomore Rodrigo Morgado. However, UTSA clinched the point with victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions.
The Roadrunners then won three of the six singles matches to win the contest.
Samford's Richard Walsh tied the match at one when he defeated Hermann Moran, who was making his Roadrunners debut, in straight sets (6-0, 6-1) at the No. 6 slot. Senior Adam Becker gave the Roadrunners a 2-1 edge with his 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 3.
The Bulldogs tied the match at two after Brian Dushock handed freshman Max Stratmann a 6-4, 6-2 loss at the No. 5 spot. However, Morgado cruised past Jordan Delass 6-3, 6-2 at the top spot to give UTSA a 3-2 advantage and freshman Daniel Moreiras then clinched the match after winning a tough three-thriller over Huffman. Moreiras fell 6-4 in the first set but bounced back to win the next two sets (6-2, 6-3).
UTSA travels to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for a Southland Conference match on Saturday, April 5.
