Aggies hand Roadrunners 4-3 loss on Wednesday

SAN ANTONIO ? The UTSA men’s tennis team dropped 4-3 heart-breaker against New Mexico State on Wednesday afternoon at the UTSA Tennis Center.

The Aggies (8-5) took the early lead over the Roadrunners (5-10) when they won the doubles point with victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 slots. Senior Adam Becker and junior Robin Fernandes won their match at the No. 2 position, 8-7.

The two squads split the six singles matches.

New Mexico State increased its lead to 2-0 when Alejandro DeMucha defeated freshman Max Stratmann 6-2, 6-3, at the No. 6 spot. Becker cut the deficit to one with his straight-sets win (6-4, 7-5) over Stefan McKinney at the No. 4 position. The Aggies pushed their advantage to 3-1 when Roman Stoisavijevic collected a 6-3, 6-4 win against Fernandes at the No. 2 spot.

The Roadrunners tied the match at three when freshman Daniel Moreiras handed Eduardo Salas a 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 loss at No. 5 for his tram-leading 10th victory of the year and junior Andre Moreira came off the court at No. 3 with a tough three-set triumph (6-4, 4-6, 7-6).

The match came down to the top spot, but sophomore Rodrigo Morgado was unable to get past Gustave Diep. Morgado cruised in the first set, 6-3, but he dropped the next two sets and New Mexico State held on for the one-point win.

The Roadrunners conclude their three-match home stand on Thursday against Samford.
