| Freshman Tyler Carpenter went 3-for-4 with an RBI on Tuesday night. |
SAN ANTONIO ? Brian Ruggiano singled home pinch runner Ben Feltner with the go-ahead run with two down in the ninth and No. 20 Texas A&M rallied for a 5-4 victory against UTSA on Tuesday night at Wolff Stadium.
The Roadrunners, who lost for the third time in the past four contests, saw their record drop to 15-9 with the one-run loss, while the Aggies snapped a two-game skid and improved to 18-6 on the season.
After UTSA tied the game at four on junior right fielder Jose Hernandez' two-out base hit to right in the eighth, Darby Brown led off the final frame with a sharp grounder through the left side of the infield off sophomore closer Zach Calhoon (1-1). The Spring native struck out the next two Aggies, but Brown then stole second and pulled his hamstring in the process. Feltner came on as a pinch runner and Ruggiano looped a sinking liner that just dropped in front of senior Phillip Allen to give A&M a one-run edge.
Travis Starling, who blew his first save of the year (six chances) in the eighth, tossed a scoreless ninth to pick up his second win of the season.
A run-scoring double by junior center fielder Michael Rockett and back-to-back singles by freshman catcher Tyler Carpenter and sophomore third baseman Ryan Rummel gave the Roadrunners a 3-0 advantage after three innings of play.
The Aggies pulled within one with two runs in the fifth against UTSA left-handed starter Kris Rupeke. Texas A&M went on to plate a pair two frames later to go up 4-3.
Junior shortstop James Keithey and sophomore designated hitter Tim Palincsar both had base hits to extend their hitting streaks to 11 and 10 games, respectively, while Carpenter had a career-high three base knocks to extend his stretch to nine games. Rockett was 2-for-3 and he has hit in seven straight.
Ruggiano led the Aggies with a career-best three hits and Luke Anders and Brown added two safeties apiece.
Ruepke gave up two runs on five hits and fanned two in 4.2 innings of work, while Texas A&M starter Scott Migl lasted just three frames, allowing three runs on six hits and a pair of walks.
UTSA hosts Prairie View (12-12) on 2 p.m. on Wednesday at Roadrunner Field. Sophomore southpaw Andy Benedict (1-0, 3.24 ERA) will get the start for the Roadrunners.
