TUCSON, Ariz. ? The UTSA women’s track & field team posted eight top-five finishes against a top-notch field that incuded Air Force, Arizona, BYU and LSU on Saturday at the Willie Williams Classic.
Sophomore Dana Mecke continued her solid season in the middle distances with a pair of top-four efforts. She clocked a personal-best 2:13.59 to finish as the top collegian and third overall behind pros Ayisha Mitchell (2:10.85) and Mary Ann Schauerhamer (2:12.69) in the 800 meters. Mecke stopped the clock at 4:40.45, also a personal-best, to place fourth among collegians and seventh overall in the 1,500m.
Senior Brittany Epps leaped to an 18-9 measure to finish third overall and second among collegiate competitors, while she joined juniors Shanelle Slaughter and Ashley Jackson and sophomore Jessica Jones for a third-place time of 46.77 in the 4x100m relay. Epps also passed the baton with freshmen Shavonne Armbrister, Lauren Wilson and Kim Brooks in the 4x400m relay, as the quartet posted a fifth-place time of 3:53.12.
Jones was busy registering a pair of career marks in the hurdles, finishing second in the 400m variety in 1:02.38, and fourth in the 100m in 14.16.
In other action, freshman Aimee Jonas cleared 5-2 ? to tie for fourth in the high jump, freshman Rebekah Hill skipped to a 36-0 ? mark to place sixth in the triple jump and Brooks clocked a 2:18.31 for eighth in the 800m.
The Roadrunners will take next week off in preparation for the Texas Relays held Wednesday-Saturday, April 2-5, in Austin.
