McGowen, Johnson post wins in opening day of Hurricane Invitational

CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Freshman P.J. McGowen led four Roadrunners who finished in top five inthe high jump andsenior Luke Johnson won the shot put to lead the UTSA men's track & field team on Friday at the Hurricane Invitational.

McGowen, who cleared an NCAA Regional 6-10 ? (2.10m), picked up the win in just his second collegiate outdoor meet. He is the third Roadrunner to collect a regional-qualifying mark this year [(seniors Steven Brown (100 meters) and Will Vese (110-meter hurdles)]. Sophomores Johnathan Whittaker and Marcus Bibles tied for second with leaps of 6-7 (2.01m) and junior Carvey Evans placed fifth with that same height.

Meanwhile, Johnson claimed victory in his first shot put competition of the campaign with his toss of 53-3 ? (16.25m), which was nearly two feet better than runner-up Paul Applegate of Rutgers. Sophomore Ryan McMakin finished seventh (46-4/14.12m) and junior Tommy Wolfe was one spot behind with his heave of 43-8 (13.31m).

The meet concludes on Saturday.
