SAN ANTONIO ? Sophomore Johnathan Whittaker won the high jump on Friday to highlight the UTSA men's track & field team's effort at the outdoor season-opening UTSA Relays at Blossom Stadium.
Whittaker led five Roadrunners who finished in the top six with his clearance of 6-7 ? (2.02m). Sophomore Marcus Bibles and freshman P.J. McGowen both leaped 6-7 ? but Whittaker had fewer misses and the pair finished second and third, respectively, after competing in a jump off. Juniors Carvey Evans (6-5 ?/1.97m) and Jake Story (6-1 ?/1.87m) finished fifth and sixth for the Roadrunners.
Senior Luke Johnson placed second in the shot put with his toss of 53-9 ? (16.40m). Texas State's Kemuel Morales won the event with a throw of 54-10 ? (16.73m).
In the preliminary running heats, seniors Steven Brown and Will Vese cruised to the top times in their respective events.
Brown, the 2008 Southland Conference Indoor Athlete of the Year, kicked off his final outdoor campaign in style, as he raced to a wind-aided NCAA Regional time of 10.46 in the 100 meters.
Vese, meanwhile, stopped the clock in 14.40 in the 110-meter hurdles to advance to Saturday's final.
The two-day meet concludes on Saturday.
Williams unable to advance at NCAA Indoor Championships
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. ? Sophomore Teddy Williams finished fifth in his 60 meters preliminary heat on Friday night and did not advance to the semifinals at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Williams clocked a 6.76 in the third and final heat of the evening, as his indoor campaign came to an end at the Randal Tyson Track Center.
