SAN ANTONIO ? Winning performances by seniors Steven Brown and Will Vese, junior Tommy Wolfe, sophomore Alton St. Rose, freshman Jacob McDonald and the 1,600-meter relay squad highlighted the Roadrunners men's track & field team's final day of action at the ninth annual UTSA Relays on Saturday at Blossom Stadium.
Coupled with sophomore Johnathan Whittaker's victory in the high jump (6-7 ?/2.02m) on Friday evening, UTSA won a total of seven titles in its outdoor season-opening meet.
Vese picked up his first NCAA Regional time of the season when he raced to a windy 14.03 in winning the 110-meter hurdles. His mark was 70 one-hundredths of a second quicker than second-place finisher Todd Wildman of Trinity. On Friday, the Houston native recorded the top preliminary time, when he stopped the clock in 14.40.
Meanwhile, St. Rose won the triple jump when he skipped 48-8 ? (14.84m) to shatter the UTSA record he set a year ago at the Southland Conference Championships (wind-aided 48-0/14.63m).
Brown easily won the 100 meters when he crossed the tape in 10.58. His time was 38 one-hundredths of a second better than second-place finisher Adam Higginbotham of Texas State. The Mesquite native raced to the top preliminary time (10.46w) and it also was a regional qualifying mark.
Wolfe was victorious in the javelin with a personal-best toss of 194-8 (59.34m), which is the third-best performance in school annals. The mark destroyed his former career-best of 181-11 (55.45m) set during last year's SLC Championships decathlon.
McDonald won the pole vault in a jump off against Wolfe with a clearance of 15-7 (4.75m). The San Angelo native also placed fourth in the javelin with his throw of 178-6 (54.46m).
UTSA's other winner of the day was its top 1,600-meter relay team. The quartet passed the stick in 3:22.08 to outdistance Texas A&M-Kingsville by 66 one-hundredths of a second.
The Roadrunners are back in action next weekend when they compete at the Hurricane Invitational in Miami. The two-day meet gets underway on Friday, March 21.
