FRISCO ? The UTSA women’s basketball team placed three players on the All-Southland Conference teams, the league office announced on Monday.
Junior guard Monica Gibbs earned first-team honors, junior forward Onika Anderson collected second-team accolades and was named the league's Newcomer of the Year and senior guard Terrie Davis was a third-team selection.
“It’s a great honor for Monica to be named to the first team.” head coach Rae Rippetoe-Blair said. “She had a good year for us and deserves this award. Onika’s season was tremendous and I wasn’t surprised about her getting Newcomer of the Year but being named to the second team was a bonus for her. It was a great deal to see Terrie’s name on the third team, as she had a solid season for us.”
Gibbs, who was the 2006 SLC Freshman of the Year and a second-team all-league selection a year ago, is averaging a league-best 5.7 assists per game and ranks fifth in rebounding (7.7 pg) and eighth in steals (1.9). The Stillwater, Okla., native ranks second on the team with five double-doubles and third at 10.9 points per contest. Gibbs became UTSA’s all-time assists leader with seven dimes on Feb. 14 against Southeastern Louisiana and has pushed her all-time total to 437 since breaking the record.
Anderson has made an immediate impact in the league, averaging a team-best 14.0 points and 9.1 rebounds per game. The Pine Bluff, Ark., native also has tallied a team-best eight double-doubles, 51.9 field goal percentage and 16 double-figure scoring games, including 12 in a row heading into this week's SLC Tournament.
Meanwhile, Davis picked up her first postseason award. She ranks first on the team with a UTSA-record 67 3-pointers and her 11.4 points per game are a career high and stand second on the squad. Davis’ eight three-balls on Jan. 12 against Lamar set a single-game mark and she is UTSA’s all-time leader with 180.
The No. 3 seed Roadrunners (20-9) take on sixth-seeded Northwestern State (15-14) at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Merrell Center in Katy.
